Last week, on 20 March, we joined our sector to celebrate World Theatre Day for Children and Young People. Through PYA England and members of the ASSITEJ community, we stand together with artists and educators worldwide to ensure that children’s cultural rights aren’t just an afterthought—they are center stage.

A Vital Message: “Today. Everyday.”

This year’s campaign carries a clear and urgent message: “Staging the rights of children. Today. Everyday.”

In a world where economic constraints, shifting political priorities, and social inequality often push the arts to the margins, children’s access to culture is increasingly under pressure. For many young people, the opportunity to encounter live performance is becoming a rarity rather than a right.

We believe theatre is more than just entertainment. It is a vital space where:

  • Rights are exercised through active participation.

  • Identities are explored in a safe, imaginative environment.

  • Voices are heard, acknowledging children as active citizens of the world.

A Global Call to Action

The urgency of this mission was echoed by Sue Giles, President of ASSITEJ International, who noted:

“Children and young people make up almost one third of humanity, and yet their right to participate in arts and culture is often overlooked or not taken seriously.”

We are committed to changing that narrative. By treating theatre for young audiences as a daily necessity rather than a symbolic gesture, we safeguard the creative future of the next generation.

Leading the Way in England

The work continues right here at home. PYA England (the UK partner for ASSITEJ) is led by a dedicated voluntary steering group, currently chaired by our very own Wendy Harris, Artistic Director of Tutti Frutti. Together, we work to address the specific needs of the performing arts sector for young audiences across the country, advocating for the resources and recognition our children deserve.

The performing arts are essential places where children can experience culture, express themselves, and engage deeply with the world around them. We are honoured to play our part in making those encounters possible.

Happy World Theatre Day to our audiences, partners, and fellow creators!
